During an exceptionally busy Sunday with several events taking place, we received a call around 4.50pm from St. John’s Ambulance volunteers based at Mermaid Beach.
An adult male had been pulled from the sea near coastal defence rocks, with injuries to his upper body. Due to the large number of people viewing the Red Arrows display at 5.00pm, the St. John’s Ambulance vehicle was having difficulty accessing the scene. Senior crew were tasked to the Leas Coastal Park to assist, linking up with Folkestone Coastguard and escorting St John’s Ambulance through emergency barriers to the beach, where they were joined by Kent Police and South East Coast Ambulance Service.
The male had various cuts to his upper body and a suspected dislocated shoulder among other injuries, so was immediately taken from the scene by South East Coast Ambulance Service, escorted by Kent Police and Folkestone Rescue due to the very heavy congestion in the area. Once clear, the ambulance left the display area and proceeded to hospital with the casualty. Folkestone Rescue’s vehicle was then escorted through the crowds by Kent Police to Sunny Sands.
